    Common Name:   Basslets are members of the Assessor genus which belong to the longfin family Plesiopidae.  Our example is the They are found in the western Pacific Ocean from Japan to Australia.

    Currently only three species have been idenfiied so here are Scientific names and dates and discoverers:

    • Assessor flavissimus Allen & Kuiter, 1976 (yellow devilfish)
    • Assessor macneilli Whitley, 1935 (blue devilfish)
    • Assessor randalli Allen & Kuiter, 1976 (Randall's devilfish)

    Where found: They are found in the western Pacific Ocean from Japan to Australia.

    Description: the Assessor randalli is found in Japanese waters and southward. They grow to about 1.25 inches, are bright blue and live in caves, mostly seen swimming upside down on the ceilings of the caves. They are mouth brooders, the male holding the eggs in is mouth till they hatch.
